Facebook is famous for lifting designs and features from competitors to further improve them – and now, Facebook announced an impending transformation to Messenger, which is both long overdue and a hasty reaction to the pandemic. Hello Messenger Rooms – a tile view video chat experience for up to 50 participants

Note: according to an emailed press release, no Facebook account is required to join a Messenger Room. Most likely, your friends who aren’t on Facebook don’t have an account for a reason (or many, many reasons). But we understand what Zuckerberg and Co. are aiming at here.

“No need to call someone and hope it’s a good time or check everyone’s calendar first,” the press release states. “You can start and share rooms on the Facebook News Feed, Groups and Events. People can just drop by – it doesn’t get much easier than that. We will soon add similar features to Instagram Direct, WhatsApp and Portal.”

Also of note: joining a Messenger Room does not require any downloads. We are sure that your calls won’t be zoomed, uh, sorry, facebook bombed by anyone.

And when will you be able to use this exciting new feature in the world of video conferencing? Pretty soon! The press release says: “Messenger Rooms will be launched in some countries this week and expanded to the rest of the world in the coming weeks”.

Well, there you go. Get ready for more Facebook in your life.
